ICAR-CPCRI, Regional Station, Kayamkulam celebrated World Environment Day with Students on June 06, 2022

ICAR-CPCRI, Regional Station, Kayamkulamcelebrated World Environment Day (WED) with School/College students with the theme for the year 2022 “Only One Earth” making the clarion call as “Nourish Coconut and Nurture Nature”. Three Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav (My Village My Pride)teams under flagship programme promulgated by Shri Narendra Modiji, Hon’ble Prime Minster of India conducted the WED celebrations in Krishnapuram, Bharanikavau and Chettikulangara Panchayats. Six schools/College in the locality were selected for the programme on 06-06-2022. Coconut seedling were planted in the school/college premises with the students, by the students and for the students supported by People’s representative including President, Grama Panchayats, Ward councillors, Agricultural Officers and other stakeholders including Parent-Teachers Association members. The school management including Headmasters / Nature club teachers were so cordial and supportive for the success of the programme.

In the follow-up sensitization programme, the ecological significance of coconut palm along the coast line including its integrity in Island ecosystem was lucidly highlighted to student community by the ICAR-CPCRI scientists. The day-to-day uses and benefits of coconut products for the mankind and its habitat security to pollinators were emphasized. The message of “My Coconut My Legacy” was inculcated in the young minds to evolve farming instincts with environmentally responsible strategies. Students were transformed as brand ambassadors of coconut farming with practical hands-on experience on planting with organic amendments such as Kera Probio, neem cake, bonemeal etc and pest management solution using naphthalene balls. Technology-connect at the student’s doorstep was the landmark of the programme so that environment awareness is not restricted for the day but sustained all through the life. Scientists infused on recording observations on growth parameters of seedlings and interpreting the data in coming days. Interacting with scientists, the students were so enthused to understand the science of farming and ecosystem services and benefits of coconut palm.
