Field Day on Arecanut Dwarf Hybrids sponsored by DASD, Calicut

A Field Day on “Arecanut Dwarf Hybrids” sponsored by Directorate of Arecanut and Spices Development (DASD), Calicut, was organized by ICAR-CPCRI, Regional Station, Vittal,at Mundoor Primary Agricultural Coooperative Society Hall, Puttur Taluk, on 9th March 2022.The event was witnessed more than 150 participants.

The inaugural programme of the Field Day was started with the prayer song by school students, followed by ICAR song.Shri YaakubMulaar, Vice-President, Mundoor Primary Agricultural Coooperative Society, Puttur Taluk, welcomed all the guests, farmers and participants of the Field Day and briefed the gathering about the programme. During his welcome address he explained the participants about the establishment of demonstration plot on arecanut dwarf hybrids in Serve Village, Puttur Taluk, by ICAR-CPCRI, Regional Station, Vittal, with the funding from DASD, Calicut and he thanked ICAR-CPCRI and Dr. N. R. Nagaraja, Scientist-SS, ICAR-CPCRI, Regional Station, Vittal, for establishing demonstration plots on arecanut dwarf hybrids.

Shri Shashikumar Rai Baalyottu, Director, South Canara District Central Cooperative Bank Ltd., inaugurated the Field Dayand addressed the gathering about the importance of dwarf arecanut hybrids at present situation.During his inaugural address he highlighted the contribution of ICAR-CPCRI to arecanut research and praised ICAR-CPCRI for its service to farming community. He also requested ICAR-CPCRI to develop technology to manage arecanut koleroga by treating at arecanut base.

The Chief Guest Shri S. B. Jayarama Rai, Director, South Canara District Central Cooperative Bank Ltd., briefed the participants about therole of Agriculture Cooperative Societies in agriculture.During his address he mentioned that agricultural practices are changing, there are many arecanut varieties are developed and released by ICAR-CPCRI, arecanut hybrids are very different and requested the farmers to adopt good cultivation practices.

The presidential address was delivered by Shri Suresh Kumar Sorake, President, Mundoor Primary Agricultural Coooperative Society, Puttur Taluk and Progressive Farmer. During his presidential address he shared his journey of establishing ‘Demonstration plot on arecanut dwarf hybrids’ with the help of ICAR-CPCRI, Regional Station, Vittal with the funding from DASD, Calicut and he explained the benefits of arecanut dwarf hybrids. During his presidential address he also mentioned that price fluctuations are common in arecanut market. But alwaysthere will be demand for arecanut.We can achieve lot in arecanut cultivation, it is not possible in any other crop.He also highlighted that Mundoor Primary Agricultural Coooperative Society extending all help to farmers.

Dr. N. R. Nagaraja, Scientist-SS, ICAR-CPCRI, Regional Station, Vittal, the convener and resource person of the programme, briefed the gathering about the Field Day and highlighted the service of ICAR-CPCRI to the farming community.

Later felicitation programme was conducted by Mundoor Primary Agricultural Coooperative Society. Dr. Nagaraga N. R.,Scientist-SS, ICAR-CPCRI, Regional Station,Vittal, was felicitated and honoured by Shri S. B. Jayarama Rai, Director, South Canara District Central Cooperative Bank Ltd.Mundoor Primary Agricultural Coooperative Society also felicitatedand honoured,Dr. Rajkumar, Scientist-SS, ICAR-CPCRI, Kasaragod and Mr. Bhavishya,Scientist, ICAR-CPCRI, Regional Station,Vittal.

Shri C. Jayaprakash Rai, Chief Executive Officer, Mundoor Primary Agricultural Coooperative Society, proposed the vote of thanks.

Immediately after the brief inaugural session, the technical session was started. Dr. N. R. Nagaraja, Scientist-SS, ICAR-CPCRI, Regional Station, Vittal, delivered lecture on establishing demonstration plots on arecanut dwarf hybrids, varietal wealth in arecanut and quality planting material production in arecanut. Dr.Rajkumar, Scientist-SS, ICAR-CPCRI, Kasaragod, apprised the farmers about the advances in pest and disease management in arecanut. Mr. Bhavishya, Scientist, ICAR-CPCRI, Regional Station,Vittal, briefed the farmers about production technologies of arecanut.

Following the interactive technical session, Dr. N. R. Nagaraja, Scientist-SS, ICAR-CPCRI, Regional Station, Vittal, conducted a quiz competition for the participants. The Field Day came to an end with distribution of prizes to the winning teams.
