DG inaugurates Foundation Day Exhibition cum National Seminar at CPCRI, Kasaragod
A National Seminar on HARNESSING PLANTATION SECTOR FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS was inaugurated at ICAR-CPCRI. The programme was presided over by Dr. K.B. Hebbar, Director, CPCRI on 3rd January 2025,
Chief Guest of the function, Dr. Himanshu Pathak, Secretary, DARE, and Director General, ICAR, declared the National Seminar on HARNESSING PLANTATION SECTORFOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOAL open. He recalled that from time immemorial, coconut is worshipped as a heavenly palm.
He emphasized that, in the future for prosperity of Indian agriculture, the following five actions are inevitable:
• Science and technology adoption,
• Market orientation,
• Women and youth-friendly farming,
• Input use efficiency with nature-friendly farming
• Culture blended agriculture
“After independence, the 50s & 60s mainly belonged to traditional farming while the 70s needed the green revolution, and 80s onwards fertilizer & irrigation were given more emphasis. In the future, it is required to intensify the science and technology based agriculture, for realizing Vikshit Bharat” he reiterated.
India is showing now an agricultural growth rate of 3.5%. It is happening because of the progress in horticulture, fisheries and livestock sectors.
Earlier on the day, Hon’ble DG laid the foundation stone of the new building of KVK Kasaragod at Chowki, Kasaragod. He also inaugurated a multi-utility hub including the SBI branch, ATM, sales parlour, and the Bharat Ratna MS Swaminathan committee hall and commissioned a 110 kw solar power grid. A Kalpa agri-expo 2025 exhibitions was also inaugurated.
The expo has quality-planting materials, valuable handicrafts and homemade products from the farmers and SHGs for sale.During the welcome address, Dr. K.B. Hebbar, Director, ICAR-CPCRI, Kasaragod, highlighted that the importance of share of plantation crops in terms of agricultural economy, especially in exports, which touched around 13%. He highlighted the institute's recent achievements.
Dr. V.B. Patel, ADG (Fruit and Plantation Crops), ICAR, New Delhi, was the guest of honour. He congratulated CPCRI for developing more number of technologies. He urged that bioactive compounds needs to be extracted from the plantation crops for sustainable future income.

Rajendra, Shatamangala arecanut variety to Mr. Joice George, Bio agents Trichoderma coir pith cake, Trichoderma harzianum to Ms. Bindu from Karshika Sevana Kendram, Kalpa Shatabdi coconut variety to Mr. Santhosh, Kalpa EPN technology to Mr. Niranjan Prabhu, Carbonated tender coconut water to Mr. Anantha Nayak, Trichoderma coir pith cake to Mr. Prashanth P Nayak, Coco fermentation technology to Mr. Nithin Chordia, Rotary dryer technology to Mrs. Shafeeja, and MTA with Dr. I. Karunasagar, Nitte University on microbial inoculants.
Releases were made during the occasion, which include the Abstract Book, Kalpa Bhooma product for circular bioeconomy, launch of Kisan Samridhi Portal, Virtual website assistant to ICAR-CPCRI official website.
Officials from the CAMPCO urged ICAR to intervene to address the challenges of illegal import of arecanut, moisture and health issues.
Pro-Bproprietor expressed his thankfulness to ICAR for export opportunity for technology products
Shri Sathyanarayana Udupa, Neera extractor has expressed his happiness, over the coconut based value added product prospects for the next decade for exports.
The DG had distributed seedlings and climbing devices to farmers on the occasion.
Dr. V. Venkatasubramanian, Director, ICAR-ATARI, Bangalore felicitated for technologies that are making global presence, esp. Neera.Dr. J. Dinakara Adiga, Director, ICAR-DCR, Puttur, Dr. George Ninan, Director, ICAR-CIFT, Cochin, Dr. Grinson George, Director, ICAR- CMFRI, Cochin also felicitated the seminar.
